Lookout Hill & Saltmarsh Loop
Cross the historic 1889 Victorian Causeway over protected tidal saltmarshes and ascend through Mediterranean heather paths to enjoy 360° panoramas across Clew Bay's 365 islands.
A Rare Coastal Flora & Island Viewpoint Walk
The Lookout Hill and Saltmarsh Loop is Mulranny's flagship waymarked foot trail, starting at historic Mulranny Pier and guiding walkers through a landscape rich in natural beauty. Leaving the pier along Trawoughter Strand, the path connects directly to the Victorian Causeway built in 1889. This landmark structure bridged the tidal marine lagoon, giving villagers access to the sea while protecting the delicate estuarine dynamics below.
Crossing the causeway brings hikers into a European-designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC) featuring rare coastal saltmarsh habitats. At low tide, the nutrient-rich tidal flats become an essential feeding ground for wading birds like curlews, little egrets, and brent geese. The sheltered waters create a unique estuarine microclimate where marine life thrives in complete harmony with the changing tides.
Beyond the saltmarsh, the trail climbs toward Lookout Hill, renowned among botanists for harboring rare Mediterranean Heath (Erica x darleyensis) and Irish Heath (Erica erigena). Mulranny is one of the exceptionally rare places in Ireland where these flora species grow wild. They flourish here thanks to the warming influence of the North Atlantic Drift current and sheltered, frost-free hillsides.
Red arrow markers guide walkers past the historic Rath woodland section as grassy tracks open onto the high ridge. Reaching the summit rewards hikers with an unforgettable 360-degree panorama across the entire bay. Looking south reveals Clew Bay's famous archipelago of 365 sunken drumlin islands bounded by Croagh Patrick on the horizon.
Completing the loop, the trail descends southwest across soft coastal heathland before turning back along the shoreline. The track skirts the sheltered saltmarsh edge to finish neatly where it began at Mulranny Pier. This 5.9km walk delivers an authentic Wild Atlantic Way experience packed with ecology, history, and stunning coastal scenery.
