Mulranny Causeway Loop
An easy, gentle 4.7 km circular trail taking in the landmark 1889 Victorian Causeway, protected estuarine saltmarsh, and tranquil views across Trawoughter Strand and Clew Bay.
A Gentle Stroll Through Estuarine Beauty
The Mulranny Causeway Loop is an accessible, family-friendly walk ideal for anyone seeking a low-impact coastal walk packed with history and wildlife. Marked by green arrows, this 2.5 km circular trail begins at the scenic Mulranny Pier trailhead.
Leaving the pier, walkers cross the iconic Victorian Causeway. Constructed in 1889 to connect the village directly to the beach, this historic stone structure spans the tidal marine lagoon and sensitive saltmarsh ecosystem.
The trail contours along flat, level footpaths bordering Trawoughter Strand and protected European Special Area of Conservation (SAC) mudflats. Depending on the tide, visitors can watch wading birds foraging in the intertidal zone or marvel at the tranquil waters reflecting the Nephin Beg mountain range.
Without demanding steep climbs, this walk offers wide open vistas of Clew Bay, making it perfect for afternoon strolls, birdwatching, and photography.
